One girl's journey through the makeup industry

Spring Cleaning – Makeup Edition April 7, 2013

Finally, trees are turning green, flowers are blooming, the wind is softly blowing in cool hair on a warm day.  Spring is upon us!!  While my husband and I are in full-blown Spring Cleaning mode, purging our house of things we haven’t touched in years, I figured I would give you all some tips and guidelines on how to keep your makeup collection up-to-date and clean.

What many people don’t know is that expired, unclean makeup can lead to those pesky breakouts we get.  If your brushes are never cleaned, they harbor tons of bacteria which cause blotchy skin and pimples.  Shadows, foundation, compacts, pretty much all of your makeup, if not cleaned and sanitized can become a place for bacteria to hide.

As I am a makeup artist, I take pride in my sanitation and cleanliness of my makeup.  There are a few products that I would HIGHLY recommend to my readers – all of these will help clean your brushes, sanitize your makeup and get you in a better habit so that if you do have a minor breakout, you can say cross out the possibility that it comes from your cosmetics.

1. Cleaning your brushes

It is important to deep-clean your brushes as often as once a week.  Now your asking, deep-cleaning, what does that entail?  A VERY inexpensive and effective way I clean my brushes to rid them of product is Johnson’s Baby Shampoo.

Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, Lavender scent – $5.79

I prefer to use the Lavender scent because I just smells divine and most of my clients love the scent as well!  Honestly, any gentle baby shampoo will do.  Just wet your brush, making sure you do not let water get into the ferrule – the usually silver, metal part of the brush handle that holds the brush hair.  If this part of the brush gets wet it will compromise the glue holding the bristles and eventually they will start to fall out.  So swirl the brush in the palm of your hand until all of the product comes out.  Rinse, reform the brush and let dry overnight.

For “spot-cleaning”, which is quickly cleaning and sanitizing your brushes, in between use I would never survive without my M.A.C. Brush Cleanser.

M.A.C Brush Cleanser, $14.00

This stuff is a miracle worker in my eyes.  Even with hard stained brushes that hold foundation or lipstick, this stuff cleans them so well and also has a significant amount of alcohol in it to disinfect.  All you need is the brush cleaner and a hand towel you don’t mind getting grimy and even stained.  Give the brush bristles two drops of the solution, swirl in the towel until all of the product is removed.  Before you use the brush next, make sure it is fully dry, which takes anywhere from 5-15 minutes.  Clinique, Estee Lauder and E.L.F. make similar cleaning solutions.

2. Sanitizing powder, liquid products

A staple in my makeup kit, and personal collection for serious sanitizing of my makeup is Beauty So Clean products.

This company makes amazing sanitizing products for all of your cosmetics.  There is a spray, which can be used for brushes, cream formulas, shadows, loose powder, on and on.  They also make wipes which you can clean your liners and lipsticks, anything solid.

3. Expiration dates

A few years ago, I was surprised to find out that makeup does have an expiration date and unfortunately, it’s a quick life for most of our cosmetics.  I’ve made a small list of the accepted expiration dates for most makeup.

Oil-free foundation: 1 year
Cream or compact foundation: 18 months
Concealer: 12-18 months
Powder: 2 years
Blush and bronzer: 2 years
Powder eyeshadow: 2 years
Cream eyeshadow: 12-18 months
Eyeliner: 2 years, if sharpened regularly
Liquid eyeliner: 3-6 months
Mascara: 3 months
Lipstick: 2 years
Lip liner: 2 years
Lip gloss: 18-24 months

If you can, remember when you opened the product and keep track.  These products will lose a lot of their staying power, vibrancy and durability if used past its expiration date.

Last, and definitely not least, when you are at a department store, or makeup store, please PLEASE please make sure you use disposable applicators instead of trying things directly from their container.  There is no telling how many people have touched these products so it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to putting things on your face and close to your eyes.

I hope you try these tips out yourself!  Remember, our skin is the biggest organ we have.  We must keep it as clean as we possibly can, and it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg at all!

March ipsy Glam Bag March 12, 2013

In my hundreds of hours looking at makeup videos, articles on Beautylish and following some AMAZINGLY talented makeup artists on Instagram I came across the monthly beauty bag subscription craze!

Obviously I’m a little late to this bandwagon but once I got the jist of how it works I immediately jumped right on board!!  I did research on a few different options from Birchbox, Beauty Bar, Glossy Box, etc.  I narrowed my choice down, finally, to the ipsy Glam Bag!

After signing up online I found that I was FOR SURE behind on the craze because I was on the waiting list for close to two months before my subscription was official and my first bag was shipped.

So, after lots of anxious and excited waiting, I received my first Glam Bag yesterday in the mail!  Not only was this wrapped in HOT PINK bubble wrapping but the bag that all the beauty goodies come in was so friggin’ cute!

The theme for this months Glam Bag was “The Great Escape” – all of the products included are great for on-the-go ladies (and gents!) heading to Spring Break or vacation with the weather warming up.

I think the bag is so cute!  It’s the perfect size for taking all of your “essential” makeup and beauty products with you on-the-go.  I, being the indecisive person I am, would pack this little bag FULL.

Now, onto the actual goodies inside!

Juice Beauty Hydrating Mist

Juice Beauty products are made with certified organic ingredients – which give them their slogan “The Organic Solution”.  This hydrating mist tones and refreshes the skin with a blend of rosehip, ylang ylang, resveratrol grapeseed oil and antioxidant-rich organic juices for a fresh radiant complexion.  It says to mist on freshly cleaned skin and throughout the day for exhilarating refreshment.

I did just that – I cleaned my skin thoroughly and applied the mist before any moisturizer or eye cream and let it really sink into the skin.  I honestly noticed my skin looked so radiant after it dried and the texture of my skin was extremely smooth.  I will definitely be using this stuff throughout the spring and summer months for a refreshing, cool feeling!

Get this amazing hydrating mist at www.juicebeauty.com.

Top – so vein
Bottom – sand dune – which is BARELY visible but it’s there!

After swatching these shadows my first impression was they are a little chalky.  It took me 4 swipes of each color to get any kind of vibrancy on my hand when swatching.  They are beautiful colors but it takes some working with it and patience to get any color payoff.  Stay tuned for a look including “so vein” and “sand dune”.

L’oreal Infallible 24-hour Eyeshadow March 10, 2013

The L’oreal Infallible Shadows have quickly become my FAVORITE eye shadows of all time!  Not only do they have a wide range of shades to choose from but the formula of these beauties is amazing – they transfer SUPER-pigmented color to the lids, they blend beautifully and they last throughout the day without wearing off.

The texture is almost buttery to the touch and almost feel creamy at first and set to a powder finish, if that makes sense!  I can, with confidence, compare them to more expensive shadows such as Urban Decay or even M.A.C.  I think they’re that great and at a much cheaper price.

You can find these at any drugstore, though some locations have more variety of colors than others.  At my local drugstore they’re priced at $8.99 but that usually changes with store locations.  I’m not exactly sure on the amount of colors they have at my local store but it’s anywhere from 10 to 18 shades that are available at various locations.

I have only collected four shades so far, though I plan to broaden my collection slowly!  I wear these shadows almost daily and I’ve been so happy with the outcome.

556 – Smoldering Plum 335 – Golden Emerald 892 – Amber Rush 890 {smashed!} – Bronzed Taupe

On a daily basis I apply Amber Rush all over the lid until I get to the crease and then blend Bronzed Taupe into the outer corner and into the crease.  I also take Bronzed Taupe and apply a small amount, with a small detail brush, to the lower lashline to add definition.

Here are a few looks I’ve created with these shadows.

I used Smoldering Plum through the crease and outer corner on this look

image (23)

I used Edgy Emerald all over the lid for this look.

image (24)

I used Amber Rush on the lid and Bronzed Taupe lightly through the crease on this look.

As said before, these are fast becoming a staple in my own makeup bag as well as my professional kit!  I’m so happy with all aspects of this eyeshadow range and can’t wait to try more shades!

If you have tried these, please leave a comment below and let me know the color you got and how you like them – I’d love to hear your experience!

Until next time…

First Impression of Covergirl’s NEW Outlast Stay Fabulous 3 in 1 Foundation January 31, 2013

I just recently purchased Covergirl’s Outlast Stay Fabulous 3 in 1 Foundation from the drugstore and abstained from using it until I could chronicle my First Impression for you all!

DSC_0415

This new foundation from Covergirl is $9 to $10 depending on the location and comes in 13 shades.  According to Covergirl’s claims this foundation is a primer, concealer and foundation all rolled into one.  It also provides an SPF of 20 which is always a plus in my book!  This foundation is supposed to leave all-day flawless coverage with lasting power of a primer, coverage of a concealer and blendability of a foundation in one, all while being shine-free.

I was really looking forward to trying this product with the idea in mind that one foundation has a primer and concealer all built in will take a lot of time off getting ready in the morning.  On a day to day basis I always use moisturizer, eye cream and primer so with this foundation I just started out with clean skin, prepped with my usual moisturizer.

Let’s jump right in!

DSC_0421

Freshly cleaned skin with moisturizer and the cheesiest fake smile I’ve ever put on!

I put the foundation on around 10:15 in the morning.

DSC_0515

This is the foundation with 1 layer of foundation all over

DSC_0470

After 7 1/2 hours.

I ended up using 2 full pumps of the foundation – first placing one layer of foundation all over and then adding a second layer to the necessary places – under my eyes and blemishes.  This picture shows me with JUST foundation covering the skin, no concealer whatsoever.  This is a MAJOR plus for me considering I usually have to put a heavy duty concealer under my eyes to mask my dark circles.  This foundation did amazing covering those bad boys while not looking to heavy or cakey with an extra layer.

By definition, my skin my skin is combination – being dry as can be during the winter, with an oily T-zone and I’m oily as all get out during the summer.  With this foundation my skin was begging for more moisture through the day.  I did not get too oily through my T-zone, which is great, but it felt like my skin was parched.  I also was not too fond of the finish of the foundation.  It sets in about 10 minutes to a powder/matte finish.  I usually like to have a little more glow to my skin in the colder, winter months to mimic that youthful appearance, so I did add highlighter to the high points of my face and a luminizing blush

Overall, I would have to say that this is a great foundation for oily/combination skin.  I think the coverage was amazing and the idea of only having to use moisturizer beforehand is definitely a plus!  It also has great lasting power, staying pretty much in place for a little over 7 hours for me without any touch-ups.  I will give this foundation a grade of B- because I wasn’t too fond of the powder finish or the feel of my skin underneath the foundation.

I do know I’ll be trying this foundation again in the spring/summer months to see how it combats my oilier skin – I think I’ll be RE-grading this foundation then!

If you have tried this foundation and have had different results please leave a comment below and tell me what you thought of it!

Big City Trends for a Small Town Girl January 28, 2013

Living in a small town in Southwest Virginia, it’s hard to execute runway trends on a day to day basis. I don’t know about you ladies, and gents, but if I were to walk into the grocery store wearing this:

christian-dior-spring-2013-runway-beauty

Dior Spring 2013

I would get the most awkward stares from each person who laid eyes on me. Now I’m not saying my confidence wouldn’t allow me to do this, or that I’m afraid of embarrassing myself, but it’s just not practical. It’s fun for a night out but even this exact look is a bit much for anything OTHER than the runway or editorial shoots.

This post is going to give you a small town version of big city runway trends for Spring/Summer 2013. I will break down the hottest trends and show you how I think it’s best to make it as wearable as possible on an everyday basis, or for a fun night out makeup look.

To start this weekly series, lets begin with the BIGGEST trend, and in my opinion the most exciting, for Spring/Summer 2013 on the runways is FRESH, GLOWING SKIN. Who DOESN’T want fresh looking skin that gives a youthful glow??? No one! Designer’s like Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino and DKNY had their modeling showing off that ethereal glow that we all long for!

These are a few of my favorite highlighting products that I would use to leave your skin aglow!

image (10)

Chanel – Soleil Tan de Chanel, Benefit – Watts Up, MAC – Shroom Eyeshadow, Lorac – Luminzer in Perfectly Lit

When wearing products to give your skin that glow, first make sure you’re placing it in the right areas – tops of the cheek bones, Cupid’s bow, directly under your brows and down the bridge of the nose. The whole idea behind highlighting is to place it where the sun would naturally hit! Next, don’t use much shimmer in the rest of your makeup. You don’t want your entire face to be SHINING in the light. Place a setting powder through your T-zone to counteract the shiny look where you naturally get oily through the day.

Another thing I love is on some of the runways the designers had their models with glowing skin, no much on the cheeks or eyes whatsoever, and a bright pink or red lip. This really accentuates that youthful feel and is perfect for the Spring months that we are all longing for!!

Here is a subtle glow to the skin and a super bright lip!

I hope you all can try to recreate the runway looks I’ve shown and if you do, PLEASE let me know how it turns out!

Are there any new products on the market that you may want a First Impression on?

First Impression of Revlon’s NEW Nearly Naked Foundation January 27, 2013

Today I will be doing a first impression review of Revlon’s new Nearly Naked Foundation.

So this is how a first impression works:  I’ll show you a picture of myself with prepped skin, moisturizer, eye cream and primer, which I use on a daily basis.  Then I’ll show a picture of the foundation on and describe the texture, fragrance, feel, coverage level, etc.  Lastly, I’ll do a final review at the end of the day, along with a picture, to show the longevity of the product and how it wears through the day.  So, here we go!

The NEW foundation from Revlon runs about $10.00 at most drugstore locations.  The color range has 16 shades to choose from which is great for a drugstore foundation.  Revlon claims this foundation will balance the skin with buildable coverage of flaws, perfect the skin’s tone and texture, and does not leave a heavy or cakey/greasy mess.

First, here is my NO MAKEUP self – darkest dark circles you’ll ever see and all – but you know what, I just do not care!  This is for YOU guys!

Image

The next photo is with JUST the foundation and last is of my full-face makeup.

Image

Here, you can tell that it definitely does even my skin tone. While my monster dark circles are still present, I’ve found that ONLY my heavy duty concealer does the trick of covering those babies.

Image

I’ve finished with the rest of my makeup here. I did not use any powder to set the foundation at all because I think it gives a really NATURAL glow to the skin without looking shiny at all, which I love in a foundation. It did take around 20 minutes for the foundation to set by itself, meaning to fully dry.

As of now, I’m LOVING this foundation.  It feels super light on the skin and I think I did good on the color selection which is ALWAYS hard buying from the drugstore.  It does have a slight scent to it but that doesn’t last long whatsoever. I think it looks really natural and this definitely allows my skin to show through while still giving good coverage.

I put the foundation on at 11:24 and I’m going to give the foundation 8 hours to sit on my skin before reviewing again to see how well it lasts through the day.  I will update with my final thoughts and grade around 7 tonight!

image (14)

8 hours later!

Here is a picture of the makeup 8 hours after first application.  I think it lasted great, coverage-wise, throughout the day.  As you can tell from this picture my forehead and nose are GLOWING so I recommend if you have combination/oily skin to add a setting powder on any areas that get oily through the day or purchase the pressed powder that accompanies this foundation.  I didn’t apply any setting powder in order to see how the foundation truly wore through the day.
Overall, I am super pleased with the Nearly Naked Foundation and I would give it a A-.

If you have any products you want my First Impression review on please leave a comment below and I’ll be happy to try it out!
