First Impression – tarte Amazonian Clay full coverage 12-hour Foundation February 17, 2013

DSC_0635

This foundation can be found at Sephora for $38 online.  Unfortunately, at Sephora and tarte’s website there are only 8 shades to choose from.  But I chose the shade “light” and I found that it matched perfectly.  I’m always excited to try a full-coverage foundation and one that says it stays in place for 12-hours, well, that’s my kind of foundation!

Here are tarte’s claims about this foundation:

“Whether oily, dry or combination, “skin-smart” Amazonian clay will intuitively adjust to meet and address your skin concerns for makeup that wears better, longer, and truer. This revolutionary foundation reduces the appearance of pores, discolorations, and imperfections and ensures a perfectly flawless complexion every time.”

Here is a swatch of the foundation in the shade light

Right off the bat, as you can tell from this swatch, it does completely cover any imperfections and discoloration.  You can see the bluish color of my veins on my hand right above the blended out swatch and they completely disappear when the foundation is blended out.  The texture is silky, almost mousse-like, which I love – almost a cream, almost a liquid.

I apologize for the harsh lighting, still working on the settings for my new camera! Nonetheless, this is my bare skin with only moisturizer and eye cream.

I did not apply any sort of primer, as I want to see how well the foundation would last throughout the day and also a primer would help even the texture of my skin, so I wanted to see how tarte’s claims held up!

image (19)

Here the foundation is applied with just one layer all over and applied additionally to any problem areas, such as hyper-pigmentation or current blemishes.

As seen in this picture, the foundation is full coverage and it really does blend into the skin beautifully.  My dark circles, unfortunately, had to be hidden by my holy-grail of concealers, Amazing Cosmetics – Amazing Concealer (which, if you’re like me, don’t sleep well, have a toddler and your dark circles haunt your dreams, check it out!!)

image (21)

Here, the foundation has been on for 12 hours.

Hopefully, you can tell the foundation still looks just as good as it did when first applied.  It did settle into my smile lines and creases under my eyes but that’s typical for my skin and any foundation.

Overall, I do LOVE this foundation.  I think it’s mousse-y texture is a dream to apply and it blends so well.  I did find that my nose got a little flaky through the day, as I was using tissues to get my sickyness out!  Other than that I think it’s great.  It seemed to work well with my dry areas around the perimeter of my face and as well with my oily t-zone.  I think this foundation would work great on all skin-types as it really does adjust to work for any problem areas.

The only negative I could see is the shade-range.  I hope since this foundation has had such great reviews in the past that they’ll bring out a better color range for those who are very fair or darker skin tones.

I give this foundation a B+.

tarte discover the Amazon 3-piece kit February 16, 2013

After hearing countless raves about tarte’s Amazonian clay 12-hour full coverage foundation, I decided I had to try it myself! In the colder, winter months I prefer a medium to full-coverage foundation to hide any blemishes, acne scaring and discoloration in my skin so just the name of the foundation caught my eye.

I found a set at Sephora that had a sample of the foundation along with the Pure Maracuja Oil and tarte’s Gifted mascara so I thought this would be a more economical way of testing the foundation, while receiving a few extra goodies at the same time!

I was so happy to see the box and bag that came with the 3-piece set! The beautiful design reminds me of spring, which immediately put a smile on my face as it is dreary and cold outside today! I can’t wait to put my everyday makeup essentials in the clutch-size bag to keep in my purse.

Now, on to the products included in the set.

This foundation is definitely a medium to full coverage foundation and the finish is a natural satin finish.

Look out for my First Impression post on this foundation later tomorrow as I’m wearing it throughout the morning and evening today to see how I like it.

Pure Maracuja Oil

This oil is super hydrating for the face and neck and has essential fatty acids and Vitamin C to brighten and tone skin. It is not greasy feeling whatsoever. The silver roller ball is cold to the touch so it feels soothing when applying the product!

This mascara is the first I’ve tried from tarte’s collection and I LOVE it so far. The wand has densely packed bristles and doesn’t leave my lashes clumpy at all and I found it was super lengthening as well.

Here is a demo.

Overall, I’m happy with this purchase from Sephora! Everything that came in the kit seems to live up to what it claims. As said before, check back tomorrow for my First Impression review of the Amazonian Clay 24-hour full coverage foundation.

You can find this set together at http://www.sephora.com/discover-the-amazon-3-piece-kit-P378005. It’s a new addition to Sephora’s site and is sold for $34.50. Everything included is originally a $68 value, so well worth the price!

You can also check out the tarte website at www.tarte.com to purchase these items individually.

I hope this helps you all out when thinking about purchasing any of the items discussed!

If you have tried any three of these products, or all, please leave a comment below and let me know what you thought about them!

See you soon, for my First Impression review tomorrow!

First Impression of Covergirl’s NEW Outlast Stay Fabulous 3 in 1 Foundation January 31, 2013

I just recently purchased Covergirl’s Outlast Stay Fabulous 3 in 1 Foundation from the drugstore and abstained from using it until I could chronicle my First Impression for you all!

DSC_0415

This new foundation from Covergirl is $9 to $10 depending on the location and comes in 13 shades.  According to Covergirl’s claims this foundation is a primer, concealer and foundation all rolled into one.  It also provides an SPF of 20 which is always a plus in my book!  This foundation is supposed to leave all-day flawless coverage with lasting power of a primer, coverage of a concealer and blendability of a foundation in one, all while being shine-free.

I was really looking forward to trying this product with the idea in mind that one foundation has a primer and concealer all built in will take a lot of time off getting ready in the morning.  On a day to day basis I always use moisturizer, eye cream and primer so with this foundation I just started out with clean skin, prepped with my usual moisturizer.

Let’s jump right in!

Freshly cleaned skin with moisturizer and the cheesiest fake smile I’ve ever put on!

I put the foundation on around 10:15 in the morning.

This is the foundation with 1 layer of foundation all over

DSC_0470

After 7 1/2 hours.

I ended up using 2 full pumps of the foundation – first placing one layer of foundation all over and then adding a second layer to the necessary places – under my eyes and blemishes.  This picture shows me with JUST foundation covering the skin, no concealer whatsoever.  This is a MAJOR plus for me considering I usually have to put a heavy duty concealer under my eyes to mask my dark circles.  This foundation did amazing covering those bad boys while not looking to heavy or cakey with an extra layer.

By definition, my skin my skin is combination – being dry as can be during the winter, with an oily T-zone and I’m oily as all get out during the summer.  With this foundation my skin was begging for more moisture through the day.  I did not get too oily through my T-zone, which is great, but it felt like my skin was parched.  I also was not too fond of the finish of the foundation.  It sets in about 10 minutes to a powder/matte finish.  I usually like to have a little more glow to my skin in the colder, winter months to mimic that youthful appearance, so I did add highlighter to the high points of my face and a luminizing blush

Overall, I would have to say that this is a great foundation for oily/combination skin.  I think the coverage was amazing and the idea of only having to use moisturizer beforehand is definitely a plus!  It also has great lasting power, staying pretty much in place for a little over 7 hours for me without any touch-ups.  I will give this foundation a grade of B- because I wasn’t too fond of the powder finish or the feel of my skin underneath the foundation.

I do know I’ll be trying this foundation again in the spring/summer months to see how it combats my oilier skin – I think I’ll be RE-grading this foundation then!

If you have tried this foundation and have had different results please leave a comment below and tell me what you thought of it!

Big City Trends for a Small Town Girl January 28, 2013

Living in a small town in Southwest Virginia, it’s hard to execute runway trends on a day to day basis. I don’t know about you ladies, and gents, but if I were to walk into the grocery store wearing this:

christian-dior-spring-2013-runway-beauty

Dior Spring 2013

I would get the most awkward stares from each person who laid eyes on me. Now I’m not saying my confidence wouldn’t allow me to do this, or that I’m afraid of embarrassing myself, but it’s just not practical. It’s fun for a night out but even this exact look is a bit much for anything OTHER than the runway or editorial shoots.

This post is going to give you a small town version of big city runway trends for Spring/Summer 2013. I will break down the hottest trends and show you how I think it’s best to make it as wearable as possible on an everyday basis, or for a fun night out makeup look.

To start this weekly series, lets begin with the BIGGEST trend, and in my opinion the most exciting, for Spring/Summer 2013 on the runways is FRESH, GLOWING SKIN. Who DOESN’T want fresh looking skin that gives a youthful glow??? No one! Designer’s like Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino and DKNY had their modeling showing off that ethereal glow that we all long for!

These are a few of my favorite highlighting products that I would use to leave your skin aglow!

Chanel – Soleil Tan de Chanel, Benefit – Watts Up, MAC – Shroom Eyeshadow, Lorac – Luminzer in Perfectly Lit

When wearing products to give your skin that glow, first make sure you’re placing it in the right areas – tops of the cheek bones, Cupid’s bow, directly under your brows and down the bridge of the nose. The whole idea behind highlighting is to place it where the sun would naturally hit! Next, don’t use much shimmer in the rest of your makeup. You don’t want your entire face to be SHINING in the light. Place a setting powder through your T-zone to counteract the shiny look where you naturally get oily through the day.

Another thing I love is on some of the runways the designers had their models with glowing skin, no much on the cheeks or eyes whatsoever, and a bright pink or red lip. This really accentuates that youthful feel and is perfect for the Spring months that we are all longing for!!

Here is a subtle glow to the skin and a super bright lip!

I hope you all can try to recreate the runway looks I’ve shown and if you do, PLEASE let me know how it turns out!

First Impression of Revlon’s NEW Nearly Naked Foundation January 27, 2013

Today I will be doing a first impression review of Revlon’s new Nearly Naked Foundation.

So this is how a first impression works:  I’ll show you a picture of myself with prepped skin, moisturizer, eye cream and primer, which I use on a daily basis.  Then I’ll show a picture of the foundation on and describe the texture, fragrance, feel, coverage level, etc.  Lastly, I’ll do a final review at the end of the day, along with a picture, to show the longevity of the product and how it wears through the day.  So, here we go!

The NEW foundation from Revlon runs about $10.00 at most drugstore locations.  The color range has 16 shades to choose from which is great for a drugstore foundation.  Revlon claims this foundation will balance the skin with buildable coverage of flaws, perfect the skin’s tone and texture, and does not leave a heavy or cakey/greasy mess.

First, here is my NO MAKEUP self – darkest dark circles you’ll ever see and all – but you know what, I just do not care!  This is for YOU guys!

Image

The next photo is with JUST the foundation and last is of my full-face makeup.

Image

Here, you can tell that it definitely does even my skin tone. While my monster dark circles are still present, I’ve found that ONLY my heavy duty concealer does the trick of covering those babies.

Image

I’ve finished with the rest of my makeup here. I did not use any powder to set the foundation at all because I think it gives a really NATURAL glow to the skin without looking shiny at all, which I love in a foundation. It did take around 20 minutes for the foundation to set by itself, meaning to fully dry.

As of now, I’m LOVING this foundation.  It feels super light on the skin and I think I did good on the color selection which is ALWAYS hard buying from the drugstore.  It does have a slight scent to it but that doesn’t last long whatsoever. I think it looks really natural and this definitely allows my skin to show through while still giving good coverage.

I put the foundation on at 11:24 and I’m going to give the foundation 8 hours to sit on my skin before reviewing again to see how well it lasts through the day.  I will update with my final thoughts and grade around 7 tonight!

image (14)

8 hours later!

Here is a picture of the makeup 8 hours after first application.  I think it lasted great, coverage-wise, throughout the day.  As you can tell from this picture my forehead and nose are GLOWING so I recommend if you have combination/oily skin to add a setting powder on any areas that get oily through the day or purchase the pressed powder that accompanies this foundation.  I didn’t apply any setting powder in order to see how the foundation truly wore through the day.
Overall, I am super pleased with the Nearly Naked Foundation and I would give it a A-.
